I always liked sports, especially football. And I was also one of the millions of people used to making jokes with Corinthians fans. It was practically a culture into football. But I didn’t imagine that one day I’d see it being champion of the continent.
Firstly, there are in the history of humanity some marks that make divisions, called Ages. Even into Contemporary Age (that begins more than two centuries ago, with the French Revolution) we can mention marks like the two Big World Wars, the fall of Berlin Wall and the September 11th. These marks were transformation symbols in the world.
The future generations may never know how the world was before the fall of Berlin Wall, for example. The young people, for many years, will wear the t-shirt of Che Guevara and a pair of Nike shoes, without making connections with the history or without knowing what cultural symbols like these had already represented. On the other hand, people who lived during the Second Big World War, would feel distressed to hear a parody with the National Anthem or see two groups fighting on the street for anything nonsense. Because they will know what to defend a cause means.
When some important event like these happens, the life ceases to be the same life and It all changes. The popular sports games can be considered as events capable of being remarkable. The basketball in U.S.A is, thus, as well as the football in many countries. People in all corners of the world looked up to Brazilian footballers when the Pelé’s team won the World Cup in 1958. The country changed and the football changed too.
Few football fans in the world are as fanatical as the Corinthians fans. They’re also one of the most numerous in the world. Corinthians was always been a very traditional team, with many honours and illustrious supporters, among political, artists, sociologists, teachers etc. However, for more than a hundred years, it had been tied to strong stereotypes, related to illiteracy, poverty, criminality, cultureless and, mainly, for it hasn’t got a own stadium and never had won any Libertadores of America Cup. But this situation just lasted until 2012, when the Corinthians was finally consecrated champion of the Libertadores Cup and of the Club World Cup. Furthermore, its stadium is been constructing.
All in all, the stereotypes fortunately ended, but suddenly the world is no longer the same after the Corinthian’s feat. The children who born after 2012 may never will know how was the life in world before the Corinthians win the Libertadores. Talk about football is no more so funny. The jokes don’t have the same meaning. And I can say I witnessed the world changing with the Berlin Wall going to the ground, the Twin Towers falling down and the Corinthians gaining the championships more important in its history.
