Cultural Meeting of Laranjeiras *

A decade ago, I attended the cultural meeting of Laranjeiras, which is usually held on in early January. To be honest, I didn’t know it before the period in which I lived in the State of Sergipe. Fortunately, even alone, I liked so much that I returned there in other years.

Normally, there is a kind of street festival that gathers cultural expressions like handicraft, folk dances, singers, choirs, poets etc. Then, we can see the expansion of an awareness of cultural preservation, and the highlight of the event was the Cacumbi and the Samba de Pareia, that arrive to represent Sergipe in festivals of other places. Naturally, all this is very exciting for people who like cultural researches and popular productions, but holds a limited appeal if you are a young ‘ballader’.

However, ever since the people interested were, actually, a bit different. The event wasn’t well advertised by Government or by the local broadcasting stations – much less by the nationals. So, only who really had curiosity used to travel just for attend it. Oddly, the small Laranjeiras had been received a fair amount of foreign interested in regional manifestations.

It was significant for me because it led me to have a better understanding of the process of Northeastern people formation. Actually I knew a few more about my roots, whereas my relative ancestors are from Sergipe. And the other thing was that I met some native people – so the whole experience taught me to enjoy the few regional frolics that still have got its historic features preserved in the very globalization era.
